LOVE&MADNESS
A
Taste of Honey
by
Shelagh Delaney
directed by Neil Sheppeck
Monday
1st March, 7.30pm
Shelagh
Delaney was just nineteen when she wrote A Taste
of Honey. It was first performed by Joan Littlewood's
Theatre Workshop in 1958 and memorably filmed by Tony Richardson
in 1961 starring Dora Bryan and Rita Tushingham.
The
play chronicles teenager Jo's relationship with her irresponsible
and promiscuous mother, the young Nigerian sailor who leaves
her pregnant and the gay art student who moves in to take
care of her. This modern classic is a moving portrayal of
life in northern England as the 50’s are about to
become the 60’s, with the gritty realism that characterises
the dramas of the time.
A
Taste of Honey is directed by LOVE&MADNESS
founder and Artistic Director Neil Sheppeck, who has directed
many of their most successful productions.
LOVE&MADNESS
was founded in 2000. In subsequent years the company has
become one of the hardest working companies in the country,
producing a wide range of engaging, accessible theatre drawing
on classic texts and stories for London seasons and tours
of the UK and Ireland.
“a
highly charged modern version of a once-dangerous play that
returns some of that danger to it.” Victor Hallett,
The Stage, on Neil Sheppeck’s 2008/9 production of
La Ronde
